Since we moved into the city of St John’s in 2021 I have been searching for new inspiration to make a change from the coastal cliffs in Shoe Cove. To reposition myself globally I began to photograph the DAWN from my bedroom window. From September to April the sunrise can be seen down Halley Drive whereas through the summer months it rises behind the house next door. I have painted a series of 10 egg tempera panels, 12 x 16 inches, as a record.

2021
With the invasion of Covid 19 in 2020 I could not travel on extensive painting expeditions. In August I did spend several days on the south west coast of Newfoundland and explored the Codroy Valley. This fertile farming area is very different, with its green lushness, from the rugged, windswept Atlantic coast that has been the basis of my inspiration for many years. These works are painted in traditional egg tempera on traditional, home-made gesso ground. Pure egg yolk is carefully separated from the egg and diluted 50% with water to become the painting medium that fixes the pure pigments onto the surface in layers and hatched strokes.
2020 – 2021
This is a new series of acrylic paintings on canvas where my primary focus has been to capture the wind and light shaping the rock faces on the Atlantic cliffs where I live. The wind is suggested with a light skim of interference blue streeling against the cliffs.
